Hello y'all,
Welcome to the 2009 season of Spanish Fly, Vida del Mar and other assorted salt water goodies that are on ESPN 2's Saltwater Sunday block. The shows starts airing on December 28th, 2008. We've been to some interesting spots and met some great people in the process, hopefully you'll get to go there and get to know some of these people and places as well, even if it is vicariously through the tube.
Some of these places are close to home such as Key West and Cape Canaveral, and others are literally half way around the world in Africa. It drives home the point for me that fishing and the saltwater world is an adventure whether it is in your back yard or some far-off place.
Really hope you enjoy and welcome your feedback,
Capt. Jose Wejebe

1/04/09 Sun 9:30AM - Boca Piala, Mexico
In the state of Quitana Roo on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a small fishing lodge built in 1959. Located in the heart of the Sian Kaan Ecological Reserve, Boca Paila Fishing Lodge sounds like a sun drenched tropical paradise …..right? Not so much when a series of tropical weather systems bring torrential rain , wind and squalls though the area, the fishing gets… well…soggy! Not the kind of weather for sight fishing on the flats, however, if you don’t mind getting wet and changing your tactics, there is almost always something to do to catch Bonefish, Snook and even Permit in this unusual ocean meets lagoons transitional area.

1/11/09 Sun 9:30AM - Christian Goodpaster Make A Wish, Key West, Florida
The shallow water flats of the Florida Keys “backcountry“ is the stage set for a young man with a double lung transplant to catch some fish and tell of his life or death struggle with Cystic Fibrosis. Christian Goodpaster and Jose Wejebe met some 10 years ago when the Make a Wish foundation put them together in Islamorada. Fishing in between two hurricanes Christian has only a short time as he hunts the big three of the Grand Slam, a Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon. Turns out that time was the thing that Christian had the least of. This show is dedicated in loving memory of Christian Goodpaster. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. Read about his experience in his own words here.

1/18/09 Sun 9:30AM - Seychelle Islands, Part 1 of 4
The adventure of a lifetime begins in full High Definition, as the Spanish Fly travels to the otherside of the planet for this amazing four part series. The ultimate destination is the remote atolls of the Seychelle Islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, specifically the isolated Cosmoledo Island chain north of Madagascar. The adventure is not always in the destination, however, but in the journey; underscored by the side trip to the crown jewel of South Africa's biggest safari lands... the Sabi Sabi. Several days of witnessing the ultimate in Africa's wild animal scene is captured in full High Definition, and is highlighted by close up experiences with lions, leopards, elephants, etc., and the full glory of the www.sabisabi.com experience. This is only the beginning as the adventure winds through Kenya and on to the Seychelles, where world class bonefish and Great Trevally await via the www.frontierflyfishing.co.za experience.

1/25/09 Sun 9:30AM - Seychelle Islands, Part 2 of 4
The adventure of a lifetime continues in full High Definition, as the Spanish Fly enters its second day on the other side of the planet aboard a mothership anchored in the vastly remote atolls of the Seychelle islands in the Indian Ocean. Unbelievable slats wading yields hard fighting Great Trevally (known as the GT) that engulf topwater baits and big nasty flys. Wading with sharks, bonefish and milkfish, make this a unique experience, as things become dicey when a tropical depression begins to form on the expedition. The recent side trip to the South African safari jewel of www.sabisabi.com is an incredible memory, as the current adventure with the www.frontierflyfishing.co.za expedition continues.

2/8/09 Sun 9:30AM - Live Bait Chumming
Fishing in the winter in most of the country shuts down in the winter, when people move indoors to watch fishing television shows. Not in Key West though, when the Gulfstream moves closer to the shallow water reefs bringing in the bigger pelagic fish, like tuna, mahi mahi and sailfish. Jose sets out with expert Key West fishing guides Rush Maltz (Odessea Fishing) and Steve Rodger (Spear One Charters) spend time with Jose capitalizing on the great fishing in Key West. Both guides take clientelle to the same spots fished, and the action is awesome, when the trio starts the day gettting bait, jump a giant school of jacks with frigate birds, then use live bait chumming to bring great action up to the boat where they can sight fish dolphin and tunas. Great tips for fishing winter, with a special bounus segment online at espnoutdoors.com after the show teaching the ins and outs of bottom fishing in the winter.
2/15/09 Sun 9:30AM - Seychelle Islands, Part 3 of 4
The adventure to the Seychelle Islands in the Indian Ocean continue. This the 3rd in the 4 part series of the expedition aboard the mothership Ocean Explorer with the Frontier Flyfishing adventure group out of South Africa. The incredible adventure continues even as the weather begins to turn, and the flyfishing gets shut down for several days. What to do when no sightfishing? Go to the bottom and pull giant muscle popping groupers out of the coral reefs. Multiple amazing unidentified species are caught, including from the shallower tidal channels, where weird creatures like the Napolean Wrasse are plucked.
